ETF Industry KPI – 4/26/2021

Week of April 19, 2021 KPI Summary

This week, the industry experienced 6 new ETF launches and zero closures, shifting the 2021 YTD Open-to-Close ratio to 1.50 and total US ETFs to 2,490. It has been a neutral week for US ETF total assets, up 0.04%. One thing to note is that the 1-year open to close ratio is back to 1.50. The universe was at this ratio going into March 2020, but coming out of the first two months of US covid shutdowns, the ratio dropped to around 1.00 with an equal combination of less launches and more closures. The ratio hovered between 0.90-1.10 from May 2020 to February 2021. However, over the last 2 months, there have been less closures and plenty more launched ETFs. We will continue to study the trend and identify if: 1.50 is a healthy rate of growth, the ratio drops due to trimming the unsuccessful or underfunded ETFs, or the ratio continues to rise with the universe’s pie of assets expanding with it. Both indexes experienced minimal change this week, Toroso ETF Industry Index was up 0.54% while the S&P Financial Select Sector Index trailed at -0.02%.

Why Follow the ETF Industry KPIs

The team at Toroso Investments began tracking the ETF Industry Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) in the early 2000’s and have been consistently reporting on, and analyzing these metrics ever since. The table above was the impetus for the creation of the TETF.Index, the index that tracks the ETF industry. Each week, we will share the statistics we believe to be the most useful for identifying industry trends, in addition to the performance of the TEFT.Index.
