Week of August 21, 2023 KPI Summary
Ryan Fitzgerald- This week, the industry experienced 16 ETF launches and 1 closure, shifting the 1-year Open-to-Close ratio to 1.93 and total US ETFs to 3,209.
- The 3,200 ETF threshold has been crossed for the first time. Exactly 1 year ago, we wrote our KPI article on the industry crossing 3,000 ETFs.
- When we wrote about the 3,100 ETF milestone, we mentioned that it had taken exactly 147 days from 2,900 to 3,000 and another 147 from 3,000 to 3,100. A very weird coincidence. To keep that trend alive, this article would have been written on June 19th (70 days ago), so these past 100 ETFs took their sweet time.
- A major reason for the “delay” to 3,200 is the increase in closures in the past 12-months. While 418 funds were launched, about 212 ETFs closed.
- The average launches per 12-months over the past 3 years is 404.8, so there’s been no shortage of launches.
- The open-to-close ratio of 3.76 from one year ago is now 1.93 today.
- The 3,200 ETF milestone took a few more weeks than predicted, but we’ll see if the 3,300 mark is a longer drought due to the rise of closures per week over the 12-18 months.
- The tracked indexes experienced a similar performance last week. The Toroso ETF Industry Index was down -0.3% while the S&P Financial Select Sector Index led at 0.1%.
