ETF Industry KPI – 8/22/2022

Week of August 15, 2022 KPI Summary
  • This week, the industry experienced 6 ETF launches and 3 closures, shifting the 1-year Open-to-Close ratio to 3.82 and total US ETFs to 2,996.
  • Today we start by taking a broad look at the three main ETF categories: those tracking traditional indexes, those tied to non-traditional indexes, and actively managed funds. We go for a deeper dive in the active category.
    • Active ETFs have captured more market share of the Index category in terms of Assets and Number of Funds. There has been an increase of 147 Active funds YTD compared to +24 for Non-Traditional and +1 for Traditional Index. Secondly, Non-Traditional and Traditional Index categories have decreased in assets (both -7.22% YTD), while Active funds have increased +11.6%, from 4.0% to 4.8% of total assets (+$33.5 million). A massive difference!
    • Our KPI image also features the Predicted 12-Month Revenue from Active ETFs every week, which has increased from 9.67% at the start of the year to 11.64% today (+1.96%). Meanwhile Traditional Index dropped -2.54% to 45.03% of the total, and Non-Traditional jumped +0.57% to 43.34% of the total.
  • Though Active Funds are still a small piece of total ETF assets, the growth in total funds and its market performance is accelerating its beneficial influence to industry revenue.
  • Both indexes experienced minimal change last week. Toroso ETF Industry Index was down -2.92% while the S&P Financial Select Sector Index led at -1.72%.

Why Follow the ETF Industry KPIs

The team at Toroso Investments began tracking the ETF Industry Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) in the early 2000’s and have been consistently reporting on, and analyzing these metrics ever since. The table above was the impetus for the creation of the TETF.Index, the index that tracks the ETF industry. Each week, we will share the statistics we believe to be the most useful for identifying industry trends, in addition to the performance of the TEFT.Index.
