ETF Industry KPI – 4/18//2022

Week of April 11, 2022 KPI Summary
  • This week, the industry experienced 1 ETF launch and 2 closures, shifting the 1-year Open-to-Close ratio to 5.77 (highest recorded in our weekly KPIs) and total US ETFs to 2,910.
  • Happy Easter everyone!  In America, our Easter typically features backyard egg hunts, Springtime color schemes, and cute chocolate bunnies. The Spring season is also associated with rebirth. Building on that theme, let’s take a look at the ETFs that were drawing dead in 2021, but have “resurrected” in 2022 thus far.
    • Of funds that were down 10% or more in 2021 and +10% in 2022 YTD, the largest winner by far of 2021 has been GDXU, MicroSectors Gold Miners 3X Leveraged ETN. GDXU was down 55% in 2021, but up 74% YTD.
      • Other Gold themed funds that meet the qualifications are (in order of YTD performance) GDXJ, GOEX, JGLD, and SGDJ.
    • Another group, unsurprisingly, is Silver ETFs. Both ETFs, SILJ and SLVP, were down approximately 23% in 2021, but have surged in 2022 to +18% performance YTD.
    • The final group that has resurrected in 2022 have been South American ETFs. The two top performers have been iShares MSCI Brazil ETF (EWZ) and Franklin FTSE Brazil ETF (FLBR), both down 17% in 2021 while up +31% in 2022 thus far.
      • Other ETFs that met the qualifications were ILF, GXG, EWZS, ECH, EPU, and BRF.
    • The only ETF outside of these three groups that has resurrected in 2022 is iShares MSCI Turkey ETF with 24% 2022 performance after a down 2021 year of about -27%.
  • The tracked indexes are quite the opposite of resurrected so far in 2022. While both the Toroso ETF Industry Index and the S&P Financial Select Sector Index were up +31% in 2021, their YTD performance is -10.27% and -5.13% respectively.

Why Follow the ETF Industry KPIs

The team at Toroso Investments began tracking the ETF Industry Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) in the early 2000’s and have been consistently reporting on, and analyzing these metrics ever since. The table above was the impetus for the creation of the TETF.Index, the index that tracks the ETF industry. Each week, we will share the statistics we believe to be the most useful for identifying industry trends, in addition to the performance of the TEFT.Index.
