ETF Industry KPI – 4/29/2024

Week of April 22, 2024 KPI Summary

Ryan Fitzgerald

  • This week, the industry experienced 5 ETF launches and 7 closures, shifting the 1-year Open-to-Close ratio to 2.23 and total US ETFs to 3,477.
  • It’s time for our monthly update to review some notable KPIs from April thus far (data comparing 3/31/24 – 4/28/24).
    • Total assets decreased -2.4%, there was an increase of 25 ETFs to total US ETF count (3,477), and +9 issuers by brand.
    • From our 11 asset class categories, Currency increased the most (8.86%) with Managed Futures next (8.85%). Volatility had the worst performance (-8.3%) with Geared/Swaps at second worst (-6.6%). The two largest asset classes of Equity (76.9% of assets) and Fixed Income (17.3%) dipped -2.8% and -1.1% respectively.
      • After being in the bottom two since December, Currency is atop the categories in April.
      • Commodities Physical category has risen approximately 36.4% over the last 3 months.
      • Back-to-back months with Managed Futures (a category of only 5 ETFs) in the top two categories; an AUM increase of 21.8% since 3/4/24.
    • The ETF expense ratio annual revenue increased from $14.2 Bn to $14.3 Bn.
      • Very interesting to see this increase in a down month for total assets.
  • After 5 consecutive months of increased AUM, April is the first drop of 2024. Another 9 issuers is a standout number after +9 last month as well. An increase of 25 ETFs is close to normal, but fairly low considering there were only 8 closures in April.
  • The tracked indexes had similar experiences in April. The Toroso ETF Industry Index was down -1.81% while the S&P Financial Select Sector Index led at -1.33%.

Why Follow the ETF Industry KPIs

The team at Tidal Investments, originally operating as Toroso Investments, began tracking the ETF Industry Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in the early 2000s and have been consistently reporting on, and analyzing these metrics ever since. This diligent tracking was the catalyst for the creation of the TETF.Index, an index that tracks the ETF industry. Now, as part of the Tidal Financial Group, which is affiliated with Tidal Investments, LLC, we are positioned to provide even more in-depth analysis and insights. Each week, we will share the statistics we believe to be the most useful for identifying industry trends, in addition to the performance of the TETF.Index.
