Week of December 27, 2021 KPI Summary
  • This week, the industry experienced 9 ETF launches and no closures, shifting the 1-year Open-to-Close ratio to 4.59 and total US ETFs to 2,803.
  • Over the next few weeks, we will break down some of the final 2021 KPIs. This week, we will highlight the month of December, which was a positive month for the ETF industry (data will compare 11/28/21 KPIs to 12/31/21).
    • Total assets increased approximately 3.93%, an increase of 57 ETFs to the total US ETF count (2,803), and 22 additional issuers by brand.
      • December had the largest increase of issuers by brand in 2021.
    • From our 11 asset class categories, Geared/Swaps increased the most (7.15%) and Volatility had the worst performance (-39.78%).  The two largest asset classes of Equity (78.54% of assets) and Fixed Income (16.93%) grew 4.62% and rose slightly 1.39% respectively.
  • ETF expense ratio 12-month revenue decreased from $12.43 Billion to $12.21 Billion.
  • December countered November’s drop in performance with an average positive month from 2021. The current 1-year open-to-close ratio of 4.59 is the highest of the past three years and assets are also at an all-time high ($7.22 Trillion).
  • The tracked indexes had similar experiences in December. The Toroso ETF Industry Index was up 2.97% while the S&P Financial Select Sector Index led at 3.33%.
