Week of January 15, 2024 KPI Summary
- This week, the industry experienced 9 ETF launches and 0 closures, shifting the 1-year Open-to-Close ratio to 2.09 and total US ETFs to 3,403.
- The 3,400 total ETFs mark has officially been crossed! The industry reached 3,100 ETFs exactly 1 year ago.
- While it took about a year to get from 3,000 to 3,200, it’s taken only 5 months to get the next 200. We reported the largest influx in September with 78 launches in 3 weeks alone.
- The most recent 100 ETFs have been across the last 15 weeks. Amazingly, there have been 82 closures in that time period, and the industry is still up +102 funds.
- While there is plenty of trimming of outdated and unsuccessful funds, it appears there is plenty of innovation and faith in new launches.
- In the last 15 weeks (since 10/9/23), total issuers have also increased from 297 to 310. From 3,200 to 3,300 ETFs, issuers only increased +6 for contrast.
- In previous iterations of these +100 ETF milestone updates, we have noted that it took exactly 147 days from 2,900 to 3,000 total ETFs AND 3,000 to 3,100 ETFs – a strange coincidence. Well, that trend has not continued with the last 3 time periods being 217 days, 42 days, and 105 days respectively (121.3 day average).
- As luck would have it though, the last 200 ETFs are 42 days + 105 days = 147 days!
- The tracked indexes experienced similar performance last week. The Toroso ETF Industry Index was down 0.33% while the S&P Financial Select Sector Index led at 0.96%.

Why Follow the ETF Industry KPIs
The team at Tidal Investments, originally operating as Toroso Investments, began tracking the ETF Industry Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in the early 2000s and have been consistently reporting on, and analyzing these metrics ever since. This diligent tracking was the catalyst for the creation of the TETF.Index, an index that tracks the ETF industry. Now, as part of the Tidal Financial Group, which is affiliated with Tidal Investments, LLC, we are positioned to provide even more in-depth analysis and insights. Each week, we will share the statistics we believe to be the most useful for identifying industry trends, in addition to the performance of the TETF.Index.
