ETF Industry KPI – 9/18/2023

Week of September 11, 2023 KPI Summary

Ryan Fitzgerald

  • This week, the industry experienced 14 ETF launches and 2 closures, shifting the 1-year Open-to-Close ratio to 1.81 and total US ETFs to 3,228.
  • Happy National Cheeseburger Day! September 18th is a special day for many Americans, including myself. In honor of the occasion, we are going to look at the Consumer Discretionary sector, although it could be argued that cheeseburgers are, indeed, essential.
    • The sector is made up of 27 ETFs combining approximately $29.98 Billion.
    • The largest ETF in the space by far is XLY, Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund, which has $18.8 Billion AUM.
      • The top 5 funds make up 91.2% of the Consumer Discretionary sector.
    • The Consumer Discretionary ETFs are up on average 17.5% YTD, yet down -1.1% TR 3-months.
    • 3 of the 27 ETFs were launched in 2023 (LUX, CARU, and CARD).
    • The top 2 best performers in total revenue YTD are WANT (Direxion Daily Consumer Discretionary Bull 3X ETF) and AMZU (Direxion Daily AMZN Bull 1.5X ETF) which are up 101.4% and 100.1% respectively.
    • Although the average expense ratio for Consumer Discretionary ETFs is 59.1 bps, the range is wide from 8 to 115 bps and 8 of the funds being 95 bps or more.
  • Enjoy National Cheeseburger Day, and maybe substitute that side of fries for an ETF this time!
  • The tracked indexes had similar experiences last week. The Toroso ETF Industry Index was up 0.6% while the S&P Financial Select Sector Index led at 1.5%.

Why Follow the ETF Industry KPIs

The team at Toroso Investments began tracking the ETF Industry Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) in the early 2000’s and have been consistently reporting on, and analyzing these metrics ever since. The table above was the impetus for the creation of the TETF.Index, the index that tracks the ETF industry. Each week, we will share the statistics we believe to be the most useful for identifying industry trends, in addition to the performance of the TEFT.Index.
